The 30 ECTS of the program can be recognized for future study programs.
They are enabled to proactively participate in and shape decision-making processes. In total, workers’ representatives receive a holistic, extensive qualification and hands-on learning experiences in the context of the digital transformation of work in the course of nine three-day modules. The modules address a wide range of topics including industry 4.0, resource efficiency, personnel management, data security, qualification, and design of working conditions. This approach helps in dealing with processes of transformation that the production industry is facing as it is not only altering technology but also the organization of work. that a multi-faceted view on technological, sociological, organizational and didactical issues in the context of digital transformation is chosen. This paper gives an overview of an interdisciplinary scientific teaching concept addressed at workers’ representatives developed in a cooperation of three institutions of Ruhr-University Bochum (Chair of Production Systems (LPS), Office of Cooperation RUB/IGM and Academy of RUB) and the IG Metall Education Center in Sprockhövel. The evidence from the case study is considered to expand the current understanding of Learning Factories implementation pathways. Hence, this paper presents a detailed case study conducted between 20 of a Learning Factory phased implementation that continuously and iteratively evolved in terms of resources, operation, partnerships, and teaching applications. In a phased implementation, the demonstrated results from one phase may support budget, resources, and partnership acquisition for the following stages. In these cases, a phased Learning Factory implementation may be considered. However, the necessary resources and budget for a comprehensive Learning Factory deployment may not be fully available upfront in some contexts with limited means. The existing models and cases are mainly based on the Learning Factory implementation as a single integrated project initiative. Regarding the implementation process, a few models and several case studies are provided. Existing Learning Factories definitions and morphology are already well established. Forty-three faculty members, across five time zones, are engaged in this effort.Over the last decade, Learning Factories literature has evolved significantly. These projects involve teams of students from Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering and Business. As of December 1996, over 200 interdisciplinary projects have been completed across the three schools. Industry partners provide real-world problems and are the customers for students in our senior capstone design courses.
The courses were developed by a unique team approach and their materials are available electronically over the World Wide Web. These courses are an integral part of a new curriculum option in Product Realization. Four new courses, and a revamped senior projects course which integrate manufacturing, design and business concerns and make use of these facilities have been instituted. In the first two years of operation, the Learning Factories have served over 2600 students. As a result of this initiative, over 14,000 square feet of Learning Factory facilities have been built or renovated across the partner schools. Industries, and the federal government that provided funding for this project through the ARPA Technology Reinvestment Program.
This partnership is a unique collaboration of three major universities with strong engineering programs (Penn State, University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, University of Washington), a premier high-technology government laboratory (Sandia National Laboratories), over 100 corporate partners covering a wide spectrum of U.S. The Learning Factory is the product of the Manufacturing Engineering Education Partnership (MEEP). Its goal is to provide an improved educational experience that emphasizes the interdependency of manufacturing and design in a business environment. The Learning Factory is a new practice-based curriculum and physical facilities for product realization.
